Sumac is the dried, ground deep red berries of the shrub that grows wild in Sicily, southern Italy and Middle Eastern countries. Not to be confused with the poison sumac bush we avoided as kids! Known for its beautiful color, and powerful anti-oxidant, anti- inflammatory properties, sumac has a tart, but balanced lemon flavor. Used in rice dishes, stews, kebabs, lentils, chicken, fish, appetizers and vegetables. Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. It's gorgeous pop of color makes it perfect for that finishing touch on dips, grains and veggie platters. Can be used in place of salt and pepper or as a substitute for lemon.
